Minecraft, Not enough memory!
Minecraft out of memory
A lot of people have the following error when they are playing minecraft: Out of memory!
Minecraft has run out of memory.
The solution below is focused on the game client not the server.
To allocate enough memory to minecraft we are going to make a batch file, don’t worry its easy:
Right click on your desktop en click New > Text document
Name the document anything you like, I’ll name it: minecraft
Open the document For Windows Vista 64 bit or Windows 7 64 bit type in the following: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre6\bin\javaw.exe" -Xmx1024M -Xms512M -jar "C:\Users\username\desktop\minecraft.exe"
For a 32 bit Windows Vista or Windows 7 type in the following: "C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\javaw.exe" -Xmx1024M -Xms512M -jar "C:\Users\username\desktop\minecraft.exe"
For Windows XP type in the following: "C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\javaw.exe" -Xmx1024M -Xms512M -jar "C:\Documents and Settings\username\desktop\minecraft.exe"
Put this line in your text document replace username with your own username
For username fill in your current username, to find out what your username is press the start button and your username will appear in the top right corner of your start menu for windows Vista and windows 7 users and on the top left corner for windows XP users
To find out if you are running a 64 bit windows or a 32 bit windows, click start, right click Computer or My computer and choose properties, behind system type it will say either 64 bit or 32 bit
You can experiment with the memory values in the batch file if you have more ram in your machine try 2048 for the first value and 1024 for the second for example. In notepad go to File> Save as… In the Save as type dropdown menu select All Files
Now save the file as minecraft.bat
Start minecraft using your newly created bat file from now on.
The batch file is the file with the gears in the icon, you can delete the minecraft.txt when you are done
Double click the bat file (the one with the gears) to start minecraft
Good luck!

if you are running 32 bit java on a 64 bit system it will do this…
an easy way to find out what java you are running is to open minecraft and go to settings and set your render distance to far, if you are running 32 bit it will say it”s not recomended underneath the bar… if you are running 64 bit it will say nothing
and it explains how to find out which system your running at the top of the page by opening control panel and right clicking computer and selecting properties…
if you have windows 8 its easiest to click the libraries button on your task bar (the icon that looks like file folders) and right clicking on computer along the left hand side of the page and selecting properties.
if you are in fact running 32 bit java on a 64 bit system this is where i got my 64 bit java ==> http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/java-se-jre-7-download-432155.html
and this thread on minecraft forums goes into greater detail on the issue==> (editor’s note: wrong link
)
hope this helps some of you

“C:\Program Files\Java\jre7\bin\javaw.exe” -Xmx1024M -Xms512M -jar “C:\Documents and Settings\My username\Desktop\Minecraft.exe”
Totally worked fine, launched it and worked. Remember there will be two lines and that jre7 is the current version as I post this comment. Will work even if your minecraft.exe isn’t on your browser. (just make sure your path is right)

try this in a .bat file (change username and password to your own)
START “minecraft” /high /wait “C:\Program Files\Java\jre7\bin\javaw.exe” -Xms1024m -Xmx2048m -cp “%APPDATA%\.minecraft\bin\minecraft.jar;%APPDATA%\.minecraft\bin\jinput.jar;%APPDATA%\.minecraft\bin\lwjgl.jar;%APPDATA%\.minecraft\bin\lwjgl_util.jar” -Djava.library.path=”%APPDATA%\.minecraft\bin\natives” net.minecraft.client.Minecraft username password

I had to point to my java.exe in System32 folder, although I have javaw.exe in the C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre7\bin folder it wouldn’t work, but does work with the System32 version. I then applied that to making a shortcut instead of bat file and that works too

“C:\Program Files\Java\jre7\bin\javaw.exe” -Xmx1024M -Xms512M -jar
“C:\Documents and Settings\tin\Desktop\MinecraftSP.exe”
pause
don’t blame me, I use MinecraftSP… for now… cause I can’t fix this problem and I don’t want to buy Minecraft when this will keep happenings….
I have Win XP, 32 Bit, Pentium 4, 2MB of RAM, 3.00GHZ and this is what is going on:
I did like on tutorial, changed some things cause of Java 7 and my Username:
“C:\Program Files\Java\jre7\bin\javaw.exe” -Xmx1024M -Xms512M -jar “C:\Documents and Settings\tin\Desktop\MinecraftSP.exe”
pause
It’s cool, pauses and shows this in console:
C:\Documents and Settings\tin\Desktop>”C:\Program Files\Java\jre7\bin\javaw.exe”
-Xmx1024M -Xms512M -jar “C:\Documents and Settings\tin\Desktop\MinecraftSP.exe”
C:\Documents and Settings\tin\Desktop>pause
Press any key to continue . . .
and Error says:
Java Virtual MAchine Launcher
Error: Unable to access jarfile C:\Documents and Settings\tin\Desktop\MinecraftSP.exe
I tried renaming my launcher for Minecraft to MinecraftSP.exe and MinecraftSP without .exe…
Tried alot of things, nothing works!

CANT FIND PATH
I changed the java version to jre7, after I dowloadedthe newest version
STILL CANT FIND PATH?
Why Is That
I used the line of code,
“C:\Program Files\Java\jre7\bin\javaw.exe” -Xmx6G -Xms3G -jar “C:\Users\********\desktop\minecraft.exe”
WHY
I HAVE WIN7 32 BIT?
September 11th, 2012
So, I have done all the following and when I click my .bat I get a black window with “C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre7\bin\javaw.exe” -Xmx1024M -Xms512M -jar “C:\Users\Jordan\desktop\minecraft.exe”
and then a error box that says
Error: Invalid or corrupt jarfile C:\Users\Jordan\desktop\minecraft.exe
What am I doing wrong?
Notes: I have a 64 bit Windows 7 OS and Java 7
September 7th, 2012
Well i have another problem. The batch file worked just fine for about a year. But about a week ago the batch file just stays open and doesnt open minecraft at all. I open task manager and there is the javaw.exe working but minecraft wont show. Any suggestion would be grateful
August 18th, 2012
It doesn’t recognize ” C:Program Files ”
It only reads it as C:Program
Should I remove the space?
September 7th, 2012
Did you use the double quotes? -> ” wrapped around the lines as shown in the examples? Without the quotes Windows does NOT read beyond spaces and is inadvertently confused.
And P.S., don’t forget the backslash -> \ between C: and Program Files.

I have a problem. I’m using Windows 7 Ultimate 64Bit with 4GB RAM. I tired that what Eric said, but I’m still having same problem as always:
“Error: Could not create the Java Virtual Machine.
Error: A fatal exception has occurred. Program will exit.”
I don’t know how to fix this, because I can’t find right numbers to -Xmx4096M -Xms2048M. Does anybody found a solution to this problem. I changed the jre6 to jre 7 and even to jre1.7.0_04, but still it won’t work. My minecraft is on the desktop ofc (I’m not newbie). I really need help with this!
August 9th, 2012
when i try to open the .bat it has an error message that says the system cannot find the path specified. I am running windows 7 64 bit.

.
August 8th, 2012
Nvm about that comment i did , what eric said about the whole pause thing , now it says press any button to continue and when i do , nothing happens?
August 8th, 2012
And i have a 3ram what should my first and second Ms be?
August 8th, 2012
Ok for everyone that getting syntax or unable to access errors here is a solution!
1. Open notepad
2. This is for 4GB ram +
javaw -Xmx4096m -Xmx2048m -jar “C:\Users\++++\Desktop\Minecraft.exe”
3. Change ++++ with your username!
4. Press save as
5. Select save as type – all files
6. Name it like MC.BAT
7. Press save and run it!
First of all you will need to have your minecraft.exe on your actual desktop!! Very important!
When you open MC.Bat and it only flashes and nothing happens, try opening MC.Bat by pressing right mouse button and press edit, then after whole line add a new line and say “pause” without qoutes should look like this:
javaw -Xmx4096m -Xmx2048m -jar “C:\Users\++++\Desktop\Minecraft.exe”
pause
and try opening again.
Another error that might occur is that you don’t have enough ram, because as I said this is for 4GB ram, if u want to know your values you can use the ones bellow:
1GB=1024M
2GB=2048M
3GB=3072M
4GB=4196M
5GB=5220M

September 7th, 2012
Please post your .bat file contents. Probably a type.
August 6th, 2012
I Found the Answer!!! well for me. all you have to do is replace the jre6 with jre7 “C:\Program Files\Java\jre7\bin\javaw.exe” -Xmx1024M -Xms512M -jar “C:\Users\username\desktop\minecraft.exe”
If that doesnt work the go to computer click program files then click java and there should be a file name like jre9 or something like then change the jre6 with the folder name.

June 20th, 2012
I made a bat file, it runs, it still lags into oblivion. My computer ults everything, I can play BF3 in huge multiplayers in ult. 60 fps for hours. MC, I cannot even run on it’s lowest settings for half an hour with or without the bat fix.
In far, which worked fine since Alpha and Beta for over a year, Minecraft now slows down 5 minutes after it loads all the chunks and I start moving and it slows down until it stops working. I have tried everything. I can ult all new games like Skyrim, Shogun total war, BF3, SC2, Tribes Ascend, and Diablo3. But it can’t handle Minecraft? What?
Even if I stay still in minecraft to keep it going longer, in SMP Minecraft doesn’t use dead reckoning (time stamped vectors for positions, only updating when vector changes) so it lags to all hell as it tries to update every point position change for every entity. A creeper blips all over the place on my DSL on a 3 person server. But a 64 person FPS game like Tribes Ascend plays smooth as butter.
This game is simply coded VERY poorly. Surprise though, most users have a 32 bit system since MC used to be great for older computers. Moving to only support 64 bit while doing xbox development will come back to bit them if they don’t solve this, As it is, they seem to be losing most of the PC market for no other reason except that they updated it to shit. I’d be happy with the version that was working from a while back but I can’t find it anywhere and most smp servers like to keep the latest stuff.
Actually in Beta I used to have a mod that extended the view and I pushed it to be 3x default far. It ran fine. My system is fine. This problem is not about something I am doing. I have put the settings to low, I have tried the Bat file, I have deleted all MC and JAva and re-installed, I have used mods to prevent this, I have extended my PF system and more. MC dies faster and faster with every new version they make.

To Joshua, you are allocating too much memory

June 10th, 2012
Its not working cuz it says I don’t have the right path, even when I put it on my desktop. help pleases?
June 14th, 2012
Try jre7 instead of jre6
May 31st, 2012
Doesn’t work on me (windows vista) i am doing it right, but when i save the .bat and run it, it opens minecraft, i join the world, but when i press F3 to see the memory, it is the same, nothing changes…
May 26th, 2012
I had a problem when it was on my desktop. I moved it into a Minecraft folder in Program Files and it found it ok:
“C:\Program Files\Java\jre7\bin\javaw.exe” -Xmx1024M -Xms512M -jar “C:\Program Files\Minecraft\Minecraft.exe”
Having said THAT, Minecraft still crashes…
I get a “Could not create the Java Virtual Machine” error when I try to double the memory allocation, though I have 2 Gig of RAM. * sigh *
May 19th, 2012
I know this is a fairly old post, but I was hoping for an answer to this, because I was having the same problem. I used the pause command to keep it on screen, and it just says that it can’t find the specified path. My Minecraft is on my desktop already, so I don’t know what’s wrong.
June 14th, 2012
You probably have java 7 by now so replace jre6 with jre7
May 17th, 2012
I followed your directions, and with a few bumps along the way am now running minecraft, but I am still running into the problem of the game crashing with the ‘Not enough memory blah blah’. I tried changing the jre6 to jre7 as Samir suggested but it dident change anything. I also have tried changing the values to 2048 and 1024, and I get “Could not create the Java Virtual Machine”. Is there anything else I can try?
May 13th, 2012
When I try to open the .bat file cmd opens then closes rapidly. Help!
June 14th, 2012
put an extra line in with just the word pause and see what it comes up with
May 10th, 2012
I’m not sure where you’re getting your information, but good topic. I needs to spend some time learning much more or understanding more. Thanks for wonderful info I was looking for this information for my mission.
May 6th, 2012
I have just bought Minecraft subscription for my son and hit the same problem. I tried the batch file solution above.
The batchfile runs and successfully launches . It lets me go as far as Selecting and Existing World or creating new world and then just hangs on the ‘Simulating the world for a bit’ screen.
Very frustrating. Our PC is a few years old but reasonable spec (4 CPU; 2.99Ghz, 2M RAM)
Any ideas?
April 28th, 2012
Thank you SOOOOOOO much, im able to play without any lag now thanks to you, its solved!!!
April 4th, 2012
This is how i solved the problem. I found out that because i have jre7 and not jre6 i needed to change it to jre7 in the text so seeing as i have vista 32 bit it read:
“C:\Program Files\Java\jre7\bin\javaw.exe” -Xmx1024M -Xms512M -jar “C:\Users\username\desktop\minecraft.exe”
Also remember where it says C:\users\username\desktop\minecraft.exe to delete the username part and type your ACTUAL username in. Then after i saved as type: all files and named minecraft.bat and then clicked it the black box popped up followed by the minecraft screen!!!
However if i tried to change the memory values from 1024 and 512 to 2048 (i have 2gb ram) and 1024 then tried loading it the black box came up saying ERROR: COULD NOT CREATE THE JAVE VIRTUAL MACHINE. ERROR: A FATAL EXCEPTION HAS OCCURRED. PROGRAM WILL EXIT.
May 8th, 2012
oh my god i love you
March 30th, 2012
Try 1024 for both values. Also make sure you are using java 6. If not you will need to change jre6 part.
March 29th, 2012
k, i did what u told me to do, step by step, but when i try to open it, it doesnt want to go, what do i do now. this is what i have put down, i have a 64bit laptop

March 29th, 2012
I did all of the instructions correct, and when i open the batch file it just closes.. what do i do??? im using: C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre6\bin\javaw.exe” -Xmx2048M -Xms1024M -jar “C:\Users\*************\Desktop\Minecraft”
March 27th, 2012
it says i cant put it on my desktop because the source and destination file names are the same what do i do.
March 26th, 2012

“C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\javaw.exe” -Xmx512M -Xms256M -jar “C:\Users\allan.so\Desktop\Minecraft.exe”
March 18th, 2012
i did it correct but when i open it a black box opens then quickly closes
March 5th, 2012
Hey so I’m trying to get this to work on mine, randomly I’ll get booted for not enough memory, sometimes it’s hours before it does it and other times it’s every 2-5 minutes. I’m running a 32 bit with 4 gigs of ram. I have the batch exactly like this:
“C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\javaw.exe” -Xmx1024M -Xms512M -jar “C:\Users\jordan\desktop\minecraft.exe”
The game opens and runs just fine, but I’m still getting the “Not enough memory!”
Can someone help me out tell me what it is that I’m doing wrong.
Thanks

March 3rd, 2012
Guys I tried every single thing in the comments bu it still does not working. I have 64 bit Windows 7 HP Laptop. It has 8 gb RAM. I dont think that these will help but I wanted you to check it out. It says like most errors in the comment “Unable to access jarfile.” Without these at normal minecraft it crashes in 10-15 minutes. In that 15 minutes the game slows down so I can’t even play it for 15 minutes. I’d really appreciate if you help me. If one of you know solution you can send it to my e-mail too. Sorry if i made any mistakes. Good day everyone

“C:\Users\christopher\desktop\minecraft.exe”
And it works perfectly. You can’t do -Xmx2048 -Xms1024 -jar (it’ll just pop up the error)
February 25th, 2012
“C:\Users\username\desktop\minecraft.exe”
xD
February 20th, 2012
I wrote in “C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\javaw.exe” -Xmx1024M -Xms512M -jar “C:\Users\username\desktop\minecraft.exe” in the notepad and saved it as a .bat and I have the icon with the gears but when I open it it says jarfile C:\User\username\desktop\minecraft.exe Any help would be appreciated as I am very computer illerate and my son is so frustrated with the game crashing every 10 mins. Thanks
February 16th, 2012
So, I got the game to open succesfully using the .bat. Had to redirect to the install folder as others have mentioned.
However, using the default values of 1024 and 512, the game still crashes after 10 to 15 minutes of play, which is the problem that originally promted me to try your solution. Using the larger values of 2048 and 1024, I receive the following error: “Could not create the Java Virtual Machine”.
Any suggestions would be most appreciated.
May 17th, 2012
I have exactly the same problem. Does anyone have any suggestions/solutions?
February 13th, 2012
Okay. I’ve followed done everything in the exact manner as described in the guide, I quadruple checked that the path was right, I have looked everywhere and tried just about everything and anything, and no matter what I do, it always, absolutely always, comes up with “Invalid or corrupt jarfile C:\Arran’s Files\.minecraft\Minecraft.exe”
I tried putting the .exe onto the desktop, and all the other suggestions – nothing changed.
February 12th, 2012
Hey. I get the same message. Could it be because that it says my windows vista is not teal, and i need to active it? Or should it still work?
February 11th, 2012
Hey Billy I a having the same goddamn problem. Unable to access jarfile
C:\Users\xH2OxParadox\desktop\minecraft.exe Please Email me or message me here. Im about to break my computer and rape my couch!
January 8th, 2012
mine says C:\users\*****\desktop>C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre6\bin\javaw.exe” Xmx1024m -Xms512M -jar
C:\users\******\desktop\minecraft.exe is not recognized as an internal or external command operable program or batch file
dose anyone know what i am doing wrong there
December 27th, 2011
Try to put the minecraft.exe in your download folder if on win7 and then rename it to minecraft not minecraft.exe then put the same on the text then voila
December 24th, 2011
It works just fine thanks just follow the instructions
December 8th, 2011
i did it all right when im in game i hit F3 and the values are the same does that mean it did not work?
September 19th, 2012
Hey..
I noticed that this message was posted a while ago. I was wondering if you were able to find a solution in the mean time. I have been having the same problem. I’ve done everything that anyone has ever recommended but, no matter what, when I press F3 it is stuck of 247m for some reason. This seems to be a very rare problem which I guess is why I haven’t found a solution yet.
Please! I’m getting desperate! Dose ANYONE know why this is happening?
November 28th, 2011

November 9th, 2011
playing in internet browser is working just fine but when i play it offline it gives me that annoying “Minecraft out of memory” stuff. i think i’l play it in internet browser from now on,. thanks all…
November 9th, 2011
Ok, no problem.
Lets us know when you decide you want to try to play ‘offline’ again!
November 9th, 2011
Minecraft.jar I dont know if this link works for you but it is the minecraft.jar you can launch with a bat file with just this line inside:
java -jar Minecraft.jar
Create the bat file in the same directory as the jar.
This does not work with the jar minecraft.exe downloads.
If the above link does not work, go to http://www.minecraft.net/download and under “Minecraft for windows” click on “show all platforms”, then download the minecraft.jar from the link that is under “Minecraft for linux/Other”

i deleted that minecraft.jar u asked me too and it says it can’t find minecraft jar. then i placed it back and now it says thet it is invalid or corrupt. nothing works from all the tutorials and questions from others. i don’t use any mods and i can’t download any beta from the site. my exe is on desktop, my game data folder is in the right directory ( C:\Users\*******\AppData\Roaming ), i even downloaded and installed JAVA online and offline, the batch file i create is just fine, did every step over and over again, i did every thing you told, my username vas changed here to ******* just for the privacy, i don’t have any other option than to play like it is. by the way i have a notebook with windows 7 home premium, 4gb ram, nvidia geforce 9800m gts 1gb video card, processor core duo 2.0 ghz. if this helps, but i don’t think it will. this game is on so low system requirements, i don’t get it why it is so fussy. it doesn’t use any advanced physics at all. sorry for my bad english, hope u understand.

Could you try to play Minecraft in your internet browser?
-> Go to this link: http://www.minecraft.net/play
-> And log in with your Minecraft credentials.
If you get the error again, close the website, delete the minecraft.jar file and try the above link again.
When you delete the .jar file Minecraft should update/download the file again when you play ‘in browser’.
If this works, the .bat file you have created by following thing article should work.

Hey Vainius, a couple of things to try out, first is your minecraft.exe on your desktop? Second, can you try with the values 1024 and 512 first and see if that works? Ive read somewhere that there are problems using higher values.

Hey Billie i have the same problem as our mate Xen. ” Invalid or corrupted jarfile C:User\*******\desktop\minecraft.exe ” and this is what is written on that black little window: ” C:\Users\*******\Desktop>”C:\Program Files \Java\jre6\bin\javaw.exe” -Xmx1024 -Xms512 -jar “C:\Users\*******\desktop\minecraft.exe ” Please HELP!…

Hey Pixelman, try copying over the correct line for your batch file and just changing the username, also make sure minecraft.exe is on your desktop. Also your minecraft.jar could be corrupt due to mods, if you are in fact using mods, press start and type in %appdata% in the little box in your start menu, go to the folder Roaming > .Minecraft > bin and delete the minecraft.jar
If it still wont work, log into minecraft.net and go to download the beta, there choose other platforms and rightclick save as on the minecraft.jar. Save the file somewhere convenient, go to that folder when its done and create a new batch file, in the batch file just put this line: java -jar Minecraft.jar
Save the batch file (as test.bat or something) and try it out.
Let me know how it went, we can figure this out

Think I’m having the same problem as Nick and Aaron.
Error message that pops up is
‘C:\Program’ is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.
Guessing it’s missing something in regards to the line:
“C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\javaw.exe” -Xmx1024M -Xms512M -jar
November 4th, 2011
Hey Belial, did you include the ” ” signs in this line: “C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\javaw.exe” -Xmx1024M -Xms512M -jar
If you did something else is wrong, can you post the contents of your batch file and your windows version here?
September 6th, 2012
“C:/Program Files(x86)/Java/jre7/bin/javaw.exe” -Xmx1024M -Xms512M -jar “C:/Users/Owner/desktop/minecraft.exe”
pause
I am on windows 7 and 64 bit.My message is that the system cannot find the path specified. Please help.
September 7th, 2012
Hiya, please try the backslash instead of the forwardslash.
(So: \ instead of / )
And if that does not work, check if you háve the jre7 folder. It may be an jre6 folder, of even another program files folder it resides in.

For some reason the batch file won’t open. I double click it, something flashes for a split second, and then nothing. I’m running Windows 7 64 bit, and I followed the directions exactly. I don’t know whats wrong.
October 22nd, 2011
Try adding the line pause to the end of the batch file and see what kind of message it gives you.
October 31st, 2011
Having the same problem here. What do you mean by the line pause?
October 31st, 2011
If you add an extra line with just the word “pause” (without the “”) to the batch file the program won’t close and you are able to read the error message it might give you and post it here. I can then take a look at it and help you solve the problem

Can you copy what you put in your batch file here?
October 7th, 2011
I did everything correctly, but it still doesn’t work for me.
When I try to open the .bat file, it opens the cmd-screen plus a java message saying: Unable to access jarfile C:\Users\Hugo\desktop\minecraft.exe
Any suggestions?
October 23rd, 2011
Can you tell us what os you are running and can you post the contents of your batch file?
October 23rd, 2011
Never mind I had the same problem as Max, my direction was wrong. Maybe you should change this in your thread: Open the document For Windows Vista 64 bit or Windows 7 64 bit type in the following: “C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre6\bin\javaw.exe” -Xmx1024M -Xms512M -jar “(Put in location of minecraft.exe here)”
But it works perfectly now!
September 20th, 2011
This is all well and good, until i try to open it, i get an error telling me that my minecraft.exe is invalid or corrupt..
October 23rd, 2011
Are you sure your minecraft.exe is in the spot the batch file points to? Also have you tried deleting minecraft and redownloading it?
August 25th, 2011

August 14th, 2011

August 14th, 2011
ok my problem was that the direction of the exe file wasn’t correct.
Check out first in your minecraft.exe file, click on properties and copy paste the direction of the file and will run properly.
Sorry for many posts. -.-
October 23rd, 2011
Sorry for the extremely late reply, yeah the batch works on the assumption your exe is on the desktop. Im glad your problem is solved!

IMPORTANT!! Make sure your original minecraft file is called Minecraft!! And not for example Minecraft (2). Keep this in mind!!
